First episode of Kaiju no.8, “The Man Who Became a Kaiju” tells the story of Kafka Hibino.
Kafka is a man who gave up on the dream he shared with his childhood friend Mina Ashiro.
The story progresses in a world where monstrosity named Kaiju roams freely and preys on humans.
In the story of Kaiju no.8, there exists a response team known as the defense force responsible for dealing with kaiju.
Kafka and Mina shared a dream of joining said defense force to kill kaiju since their childhood.
In a flashback in Kaiju no.8, it’s shown that they lost their house and loved things and entities to the Kaiju attack.
Whereas Mina was able to successfully join the force and climbed up to the post of third division’s extremely capable and successful captain, Kafka
failed and had to remain in the cleaning department.
The cleaning department performs the job of cleaning the aftermath of the defense force’s battle against kaiju.
The unsung heroes of the cleaning department, often unnoticed, perform their tasks flawlessly to return the city to its previous form.
Inside the story of Kaiju no.8
This episode of Kaiju no.8 opens with an intense battle of the third division led by Mina Ashiro against a gigantic kaiju in Yokohama city.
After the awaited victory of the third division, starts the cleaning job of Kafka and the team.
A new part-time recruit named Reno Ichikawa joins the team with the aspiration of joining the defense force in the future, who doesn’t seem to fathom the reason for Kafka giving up his quest to join the defense Force.
Here, the protagonist(Kafka) can be compared with defeated persons who are dejected by society and of their own non-qualification.
Reno is comparable to such a character, who faced fewer setbacks in life than prior, hence doesn’t understand the misery of those who are defeated in life.
Mina Ashiro is an accomplished defense force captain, on her way to becoming corps commander, with a cool personality. She can be compared with so-called overachievers in society.
Transformation
When a kaiju attacked Reno, Kafka instinctively saved him and forced him to flee the scene, as he did so.
But, when Reno came back to protect him, his lost passion sparked inside him once again but he was frustrated for being unable to take any proper steps.
After that, both of them were protected by the third division of the defense force.
The protagonist’s inability didn’t cause dejection for him any further, but aspiration to be better.
He even got word of encouragement from Reno.
He previously tried to be contented with his disposition, which was not enough anymore.
This transformation is similar to a person who is trying to turn a new leaf in his monotonous life.
Conclusion
At the last moment of this episode of Kaiju no.8, as if destiny was playing a cruel game, a parasite invades hospitalized Kafka’s body, turning him into a kaiju, and leaving viewers with a cliffhanger.
It seems like a different continuation could come to light in the next episode.
So, yes it’s a must-watch anime to continue.
