In the 7th episode of Kaiju No.8, named Kaiju No.9 a more involved contact with Kaiju Is shown.
Up until now, in episode 1 where Kafka and Reno save each other from an accidental Kaiju attack.
Even in episode 4 where Kikuru was saved by Kafka in Kaiju form, from a humanoid Kaiju.
In both situations, contact with kaiju was too much of one-sided.
That’s the thing that changes in this episode Kaiju No.9.
As for how is it so, to know that, we have to dive deep into the episode.
Previously…
In the previous episode, Kafka and the team had to go on their first-ever real mission.
It was the mission in which they had to prove their worth.
For Kafka, it was a mission of utmost importance, as he hadn’t done any good in his training seasons and was on the verge of being fired.
In the location, the newbies had to stay at the back, due to their lack of experience.
Kafka was at the last line of the team due to his lack of power, whereas his partner Reno was moved to the front.
They both had to find the work they were best at.
2nd Half
Reno was good at strategizing the ways to fight, whereas Kafka used his veteran knowledge of Kaiju biology which he acquired from his long time in the cleaning department.
On one side, Reno and Furuhashi were going through the weave of Kaiju(Yoju).
On the other side, Kafka found the weakness of the Kaiju and reported to the vice-captain Hoshina.
Captain, Mina dealt with the large Kaiju(Honju) using the given info, whereas Hoshina and others dealt with the smaller ones(Yoju).
Everything was going smoothly, then Reno And Furuhashi met a person from the cleaning department with a strange appearance, searching through Yoju’s corpses.
Next…
In this episode, Kaiju No.9, the curtain rises as Reno Ichikawa and Iharu Furuhashi meet a civilian on the battlefield.
They were weirded out by the fact, that a civilian was in a place teeming with Kaiju and unaffected.
Then they notice the weirdness in his situation as well as in his appearance.
But it was too late then, as they were already attacked by some weirdest means by that weird person.
That person soon transformed into his original form, a humanoid kaiju, Kaiju No.9.
We may as well assume he is Kaiju No. 9.
Assault of Kaiju No.9
In his first attack, he wounded Iharu badly and as Reno went to protect him, he was also wounded.
It was the same humanoid Kaiju, that attacked Kikuru in episode 4.
So, Reno knew some of his traits and was successful in evading his next attacks by observing the deformity it forms during attacking.
While suppressing Kaiju No.9 with his wit and strategy, Reno requested Iharu to call for backups.
Unwilling Iharu complied with his request and went on to call for backups.
Hopeless
While being suppressed, Kaiju No.9 found his way around Reno’s attack and started to turn the table.
Reno was using freeze bullets while dodging his attack, but as Kaiju No.9 increased his agility while morphing his body more, it all became for naught.
Kaiju No.9 became more adaptable in battle with Reno and started to counterattack.
Reno somehow was able to dodge those attacks but his further attack on Kaiju No.9 remained ineffective.
Then in a hopeless situation, where he was on the verge of being hit with an attack, was saved by Iharu out of nowhere.
Iharu didn’t call the backup as he came back for Reno.
Mindset of Iharu
Iharu had this irritation always towards Reno, as he being the academy’s elite couldn’t overcome Reno’s excellence.
Iharu’s admiration for the defense force was born during his school days.
It was the time when he was saved from a Kaiju by Mina Ashiro, now the captain of the 3rd division of the Defense Force.
But alongside of admiration he also felt hopeless in his inadequacy.
Ultimately he realized the one he was irritated about wasn’t Reno but his hopeless self.
So he decided to change for the better.
2nd Assault
Now that Iharu is back, the battle against Kaiju No.9 has taken a turn for good.
Iharu now started to use his wits and different means, he used stun bullets to restrict the movement, while Reno focused on attacking with freeze bullets.
But as an intuitive being, Kaiju No.9, understood their attack pattern very quickly and was able to dodge them.
So, Reno took a last-ditch effort, switching to regular bullets and increasing the power output to the maximum that he could muster, he showered that kaiju with the rain of bullets.
But his effort was all for naught, as Kaiju No.9 defended himself using a wall of Kaiju corpses and unleashed his torrent of attacks on Reno, rendering him nearly dead on the ground.
He kept on experimenting with Reno, the ways to stop the human motor function by torturing him with attacks.
Iharu could only pray to god if not the devil to protect his friend Reno.
Comes the savior
In the nick of time came their savior, Kafka in the form of Kaiju No.8.
The first thing he did was blow off the head of the Kaiju No.9 with a strong punch.
After moving the wounded Reno away, he engaged in the battle with the Kaiju No.9.
Iharu was baffled watching another humanoid Kaiju helping them.
Their battle continued and Kaiju No.9 managed to land an attack on Kaiju No.8.
But his further attacks were blocked by the sound barrier created by Kaiju No.8.
Next Kafka initiated his barrage of punches on the Kaiju and wounded him until his core was exposed.
That Kaiju was quite baffled by the fact that he couldn’t even defend himself from Kafka.
He was even wondering, despite being a Kaiju why Kafka was helping humans.
Escape?
At that vital time, two Defense Force cadets came to the place, while not noticing Kaiju No.9, they assumed Kafka was the culprit.
In the period of hesitation, Kaiju No.9 already recovered and escaped, so Kafka also had to escape.
But to his dismay, he was stopped by vice-captain Hoshina while escaping.
He misunderstood the misdeeds of Kaiju No.9 as Kafka’s and proceeded with the plan to terminate him.
Now that, Kafka has his escape route blocked and misunderstood, what will happen to him? Will Hoshina understand the situation?
To know more about these, stay tuned for the next episode…
