Hoshina was the vice-captain of the third division of the defense force, so in the absence of the captain, he had to tackle all the trouble that came his team’s way, unfortunately, this time, a Daikaiju came to their home base, Tachikawa Base.
In Kaiju No.8 Episode 8, Kafka came face to face with vice-captain Hoshina in his Kaiju form and was misunderstood by Hoshina as the one who harmed his colleagues.
After having a near-death experience by receiving one-sided “slicing” from him, Kafka somehow escaped.
Later, at a welcome party for Reno and Iharu, after they were discharged from the hospital, he was assigned as a full-time officer in light of his informational contribution in the first mission.
Later that night he met up with Hoshina to swear to do his best in the upcoming days.

What Came To Attack Tachikawa Base?
The story of Kaiju No.8 episode 9, starts, with Shoshiro Hoshina, reading a well-researched document on Kaiju No.8 while Kafka Hibino was, pondering on his future pathway on a building rooftop of Tachikawa Base.
Suddenly, as he was about to leave, Kafka saw a cluster of flames, falling from the sky, on the base.
Causing large explosions while landing, those alerted everyone, including Hoshina.
He requested a status report to the operation room, and in answer, he found out, that ten or more kaiju had infiltrated inside Tachikawa Base and were attacking from the sky above.
All of the kaiju had an average fortitude of 6.2, which makes all of them, of Honju class.
This is rare, because in a hoard of kaiju generally, only one Honju class exists.
However, it wasn’t the time to think about all of that, as his home turf was being violated by enemies, and Hoshina had to do something in absence of the captain Mina Ashiro.
He ordered to mobilize all available troops, including those on night watch and even those off duty.
He planned to drag all the kaiju to the training ground inside the base to prevent casualties outside.
Within blazing buildings and scorched sky, Kafka found out the kaiju they were fighting were of Wyvern-type.
But something was amiss, there was a discrepancy in the behavior of wyvern-type Honju, which Kafka identified due to his long experience in the kaiju corps cleaning department.
The number of wyvern-type kaiju sightings per year stays around ten or so, each has one thing in common, those prefer to act alone.
But while attacking Tachikawa Base, all of those teamed up, which means something or someone stronger and much more intelligent being is leading them with a clear goal planned out.
Now enters the boss of the Honjus, a Daikaiju with a fortitude of 8.3 according to the operation room.
That Daikaiju is the one, That came to attack Tachikawa Base.
Battle At Tachikawa Base
After that Daikaiju gave out a war cry, and other Honjus responded by intensifying their attack.
Ikaruga was leading the team as a countermeasure to the Honju attack as per Hoshina’s directives while including Iharu and Reno in his team.
At first, they were struggling a lot, because their ammunition wasn’t working against those wyvern-type Honjus.
Now, Kafka’s long repertoire of kaiju corps cleaning service knowledge came into play.
He notified the weakness of those Honjus, which was the back, and everyone focused their firepower towards there.
The plan seemed to work but for some time.
Watching the success rate of the plan, Haruichi and Aoi duo also implemented the plan but weren’t so lucky.
At that stage, Honjus also started to work in teams, quite unnatural of them!!
Kaijus, protecting each other’s back!!
But there is nothing better than brute force, Kikoru proved that, as Kikoru came with an unnaturally large axe, quite a bit larger than her, and swung it towards some Honjus while breaking them apart.
It was a specially made weapon from a kaiju’s organ, only given to those with great achievement or greater position, but she was given one, why?
Kikoru had the most power output among her peers and was the most accomplished one in her first mission.
Since there was no one better to represent the newcomers and she was the third most powerful person in combat in the whole base, the obvious choice was, that she also needed one specially made weapon.
Even though she was strong on the ground, she couldn’t reach the sky, but her enemy could.
She needed a hand and Reno was the perfect choice for that, as Reno proved himself to be the expert marksman by shooting down a wyvern-type Honju using freezing bullets.
That was not something a newcomer could easily achieve.
She planned to launch a guerilla attack by just the two of them, in which Aoi and Haruichi decided to join on their own accord.
On the other hand, Kafka was going around rescuing people and in one such task he made a major mistake, not thinking of the consequence, he partially used his kaiju strength to save an officer named Minase.
He was almost caught, but Minase just thought that Kafka is finally able to draw out the power of the battlesuit.
Ooh!! Maybe a cold sweat ran through Kafka’s back!!
Coming back to the point, everyone was giving their all.
Now, all the major squads started to arrive, beginning with Nakanoshima’s squad, followed by Ebina’s squad, who were on off-duty.
There were more, Takao’s platoon of long-ranged attackers, and Itakura’s platoon.
Everyone’s joint effort slowly but steadily started to push back those Honjus.
Hoshina Vs Daikaiju, Who Is The Strongest?
That Daikaiju was sentient and capable of speech.
The first thing it asked Hoshina was if he was the strongest person in that place.
Well if we exclude the now absent captain Mina and hidden strength of Kafka, obviously that is the case, so he answered accordingly.
That Daikaiju fixed Hoshina as its opponent because it planned to eat Hoshina after defeating him to become stronger.
As Hoshina proceeded to give emergency directives to Officer Ikaruga on the comm before engaging with that Daikaiju, he was attacked by that, suddenly.
After he successfully dodged the attack, he was approved as a worthy opponent by that Daikaiju, and it Incited all of the surrounding Honjus to attack.
Now, what happened regarding those Honjus, we have discussed previously, and now let us witness the battle between Hoshino and Daikaiju.
It was an intense battle from the very beginning, where Daikaiju was showering meteor-like punches while defending its own body with a hardness that surpassed the hardness of Kaiju No.8’s.
It was getting quite difficult for him to fight it and there was also a chance that a full-fledged battle would affect his surroundings, so he planned to divert that Daikaiju to a nearby training ground.
That Daikaiju wasn’t behaving normally either, it was enjoying the fight as if it was a human.
First was Kaiju No.8(metamorphosed Kafka), who behaved humanely and didn’t ever harm any human, and now this particular Daikaiju, everything seemed to be slightly off the track.
But this time, Hoshina was free of the worry of surroundings and could exchange blows, sorry slice at it with the 92% power output of the suit, very easily aiming the gaps of its exoskeleton.
That Daikaiju was perplexed at first since it didn’t expect Hoshina would slice one of it’s arms off while blocking it’s impactful punch.
It later started to tighten the gaps in his exoskeleton, only to find out that the previous attack pattern was a feint performed by Hoshina.
But this incited that Daikaiju more to fight with its full capacity to such a point, that even if Hoshina hacked it into pieces, it would get itself back together again and again to continue the fight.
To down its fighting spirit, Hoshina started to use the Hoshina-style sword slay Technique and after a lot of slicing and cutting he finally managed to expose its core, and this is where things got a bit off the track.
Up until now, according to the power that Daikaiju may seem like the stronger one but in battle, Hoshina always had the upper hand.
But after its core got exposed, it attempted and succeeded in gigantification.
While it was releasing ultra-high temperature steam, its fortitude also increased up to 9.0.
Well, at this stage, he is the most strong one around.
Now that Daikaiju literally is a “Dai”(big) Kaiju, what will Hoshina do?
