In the previous episode, after Sakura and Sugishita destroyed the border-maintaining treaty, expecting impending retribution from the opponent gang Shishitoren, Hiragi took everyone to meet their leader Umemiya Hajime.
Sakura had immense interest in meeting the leader of Bofurin and analyzing his character, as he was also aiming for the top at Furin High school.
At first glance, Umemiya came off as a simple minded person, much like a grade-schooler.
Leader material
As shown in this episode, “Clash”, at first glance, Umemiya may come off as a simple-minded, normal peace peace-loving person, but he has that charisma that draws people towards him, makes them put importance in his words.
Umemiya is a fun loving person, and himself love gardening, mainly vegetables.
He puts great importance on the people around him and the town he lives in. According to him, anybody who lives in the town of Tonpu is his family.
Forgiveness for someone, who harming his town or it’s people is nonexistent to him.
He has some funny drawbacks, like not being able to hold a conversation on the same wavelength and taking the discussion in different and funny directions often. This trait of him added a bit of comic relief to the story.
He may be easygoing in general, but in the moment of emergency, he transforms into a more serious and dependable individual.
As the current leader, he is undoubtedly close to perfect leader material.
Incident in the episode “Clash”
The reason for Sakura and Sugishita’s behaviour is explained in this episode, “Clash”.
The reason Sakura and Sugishita disturbed border maintaining treaty between Bofurin and Shishitoren was to save a middle schooler of their own town named Sasaki.
Inspired by Bofurin and their ethics, was chasing convenient store muggers as he mistakenly went inside the area of Shishitoren. After that Shishitoren members were chasing after him.
In that situation, he was saved by Sakura and Sugishita duo as they broke the border maintenance treaty with Shishitoren.
Sasaki was getting ready to face Umemiya’s anger, but it turned out differently.
But, in actuality in this episode, “Clash”, Umemiya had a broad mind.
Umemiya was impressed by his courage in taking the initiative to protect something of value for the town.
He also praised Sugishita and Sakura for their quick action and especially praised Sakura for his contribution to the town’s wellbeing since he came.
This was the time for something to happen in this episode, “Clash”.
Everything was going well, until Hiragi received a call from Kaji, at the same time they heard the voice of Shishitoren leader Tomiyama Choji.
Tomiyama barged into Furin High while beating nearby students, to have a fair one on one fight with Umemiya.
Umemiya went to face him. According to Tomiyama, as Bofurin intervened into their matter, they have to pay a price.
There was another underlying reason for such behavior. Since Tomiyama became the leader of Shishitoren, he was bored of his own height of authority, while Umemiya looked glowing in his eyes in spite of being the leader of Bofurin.
Tomiyama simply wanted Bofurin and the experience it provides for himself.
Umemiya told him to call that incident even, as Tomiyama also wreaked havoc in Bofurin’s area.
Not accepting his proposal, Tomiyama was trying to incite a fight with Umemiya.
At that time second-in-command Togame Jo came with Shishitoren team. Togame suggested having a team battle on another day. Sakura liked that Idea.
At first, Umemiya had some difficulties accepting such a proposal but had to accept that under peer pressure. Later reluctant Hiragi also willingly joined the team after he met with an old acquaintance Sako.
So the Bofurin team of fighters was Umemiya, Sakura, Sugishita, Hiragi, and Suo.
Later in the evening, these members along with Nirei held a meeting in Kotoha’s cafe, Cafe Pothos. There Sakura got to know a shocking fact, that Kotoha was at the same orphanage as Umemiya and he thought Kotoha as his younger sister.
At the cafe, they had their discussion over their upcoming event of battle with Shishitoren and Shishitoren’s history.
According to Hiragi, Shishitoren was not like this in the past. They may have been crazy for a fight, but they didn’t bully the weak.
According to Umemiya, everything changed after Tomiyama became the leader. He told that they would find out more through their conversation in the upcoming event.
Sakura was surprised as he thought, they were going to have a fistfight with Shishitoren, in answer Umemiya said a fistfight could also be a mode of conversation.
This concept was indeed new to Sakura, as he pondered over it.
Facing off
On the day of the event in the episode, “Clash”, they entered the area of Shishitoren and got ready to face them off. Now as this essential and powerful episode drops its curtain, stay tuned for the actual clash that is yet to come.
